Services and Line Profiles
Service Specifications
A service specification defines a type of service that a supplier offers - it usually maps to a product family and/or access technology e.g. simply 'FTTP' or more granular such as 'FTTH' vs 'FTTB' or 'FTTP-GIGABIT' vs 'FTTP-LITE'. The available service specifications will vary by supplier and location, and are returned in the service availability response.
Line Profiles
For each service specification, there will be 1 or more line profiles giving different options for configuring the service. Underneath, these will often map to products that the supplier offers but essentially they standardise the individual speeds and characteristics that a supplier offers. For example; line profile "FTTP-1000" could equate to 1000Mbps downstream, 1000Mbps upstream.
Line Profile Catalogue
In most cases, the line profiles can be passed straight through to the supplier as part of an order. For example, if a supplier offers product codes "FTTP-1000" and "FTTP-2000" or product ids "101" and "102" then these can used directly as the line profile for the order.
Where a supplier has more complex requirements with multiple values required to set up a service and no direct profile or product mapping, then this could be setup as a line profile catalogue on the Fibre Cafe. For example, a supplier has the following values that must be specified individually in the order:
- peak upstream
- peak downstream
- prioritised upstream
- prioritised downstream
The various permitted and/or agreed combinations can be setup as different line profiles on the Fibre Cafe.
A supplier may also have other bespoke line attributes that must be sent as part of an order. These can also be included in the line profile catalogue or sent as part of the service characteristics.
Placing Orders
When querying service availability for an address, the response will show which service specifications are available and which line profiles can be used with each service specification. When placing an order, the tenant will choose an appropriate service specification and line profile to set the appropriate service type and speed for that order.
In most cases, the line profile can be changed on an inflight order by sending an amendment request. However, the service specification is a key attribute of an order and cannot be changed - this would require the current order to be cancelled and a new order to be placed.
Similarly, once the service is live then the line profile can usually be changed by placing a modify order on that service. To change the service specification would require a provide order to be placed - this would be a 'SWAP' order type and include the SERVICE_ID of the existing service to be replaced.
